Avignon - Popes Palace

Avignon was home to seven popes during the 14th century. It seemed to be a political move starting with Pope Clement V and ending when Pope Gregory XI brought the papacy back to Rome. A few frescoes remain. The bell was rung for 24 hours when a new pope was named. The pope gave an audience daily from a balcony and looking through the window with 5 slats and decoration above.
