Steps

In case you were wondering how many steps one takes on a River Cruise vacation.

9/11/2017 14291
9/12/2017 8759
9/13/2017 7898
9/14/2017 8378

That is an average of 9,429 steps per day. Unfortunately the rich food we were served probably needed more steps!

Rully Castle7

Outside the castle, it is beautiful overlooking the grape vines. There were many cyclamens growing in the yard.

Rully Castle 6

The Count told us some stories about an ancestor of his. This woman married her husband when she was 16. She had 14 children and then her husband died when she was 32. He said her husband was just so tired!! He said one of her sons went to England for sometime and then came home and established a billiards table.

Rully Castle 5

The owner of the castle is a Count. This castle is a lot to maintain. His father died when he was 16, so his mother tried to care for the castle for years. Now it is his turn. He showed us parts of the castle that he does not currently live in.

Rully Castle 4

We had lunch in the old horse barn. The food was fabulous! We had beef Burgundy, cheesy potatoes and an apple tart. And of course a very good red wine. This chateau grows 80% white wine and 20% red wine. Most of the wines produce the more common wine, but they have a field that produces the higher wine, as they gained the highest prize for some of this wine in 2014. That year they produced 12,000 bottles of wine. They produced 180,000 bottles of the more common wine.

Rully Castle 3

Our first stop at the castle was in the basement for a taste of white wine - chardonnay. The first wine was a more common wine, but the second was a prize wine; it was very good and it is pictured below.

Rully Castle

The Rully Castle was built in the 12th century. The Castle has been owned by the same family the entire time being passed down through oldest sons. The current owner greeted us.

Next we took a ride through Burgundy Wine Country.

Beaune 6

There were many beautiful items in the hospital that were gifted to Hotel Dieu over the years to be appreciated by the poor who were attended here. Those Contributing felt this was their way to earn their way to heaven.

Beaune 5

Sisters prepared the food. The sisters eventually made their own medicines and ran their own pharmacy/apothecary.

Beaune 4

There was a section for those who could afford to pay for their time in the hospital. The mosaic floor was so beautiful.

Beaune 3

There was a chapel that opened from the sick room so patients could attend Mass if possible.

Beaune 2

Hotel Dieu

The beds are allowed privacy by the curtains that surround them, but in times of high need, there could be two or more in a bed. There were tables in the center of the room where patients could eat if they were able. An order of nuns served these patients. These sisters however were allowed to leave if they wanted, but most stayed to serve the poor.
